The Vernal Equinox ...

"equal night" ... first day of Spring ... a prelude to Easter. A time for renewal as the earth tilts on its axis and seasons change. Saturday was all of these things as we experienced a "first" without Little.

We were supposed to be on a plane to West Virginia Saturday morning for a "real vacation", our first in three years, but we decided to stay close to home in light of everything going on. So we visited Karsyn & Kaden and, as the Spring Breakers headed to Houston to flee the weather, we headed south.

I have to say it was hard to load up that car without my Little buddy. He and Big were the original car cats and started coming to the beach back in 1996. I didn't know what to expect and honestly I didn't expect any reaction from them. I was surprised and heart-broken at what happened.

Jerry dropped us off and went to pick up lunch and as soon as Elvis hit the 3rd level his nose was on the floor following trails like a bloodhound. At first I didn't get it, then I realized he was tracking Little ... breathing in the last scent of him. Maybe it was stronger here because the house had been closed up since the previous Sunday, or maybe it was that very human trait of "bargaining" after someone dies. You wake up the next day and tell yourself it was just a bad dream ~ maybe Little is at the beach.

As El covered the living room and hall, D searched the kitchen, feeding station and litterbox. He pawed the closet door open - Little's closet - and then searched the bathroom. They couldn't believe he wasn't sleeping on the white rug. I couldn't either. The process continued in the bedroom and 2nd floor bath and then El discovered the towel Little had slept on last weekend. I've given it to them to sleep on.

The weather was horrible, rain was pelting down and the wind was blowing about 25 sustained from the north/northwest. Electricity blinked out a couple of times, but only for a minute or two. WeatherBug at Scholes Field was reporting gusts to 51 ... wind chill of 24. I'm not making this up. It was 53 degrees in the bedroom with the heat on! The cold wind was blowing right through the light switches and electrical outlets on the north & west sides of the house. I covered them with duct tape and fired up the space heaters.

Jerry went to sleep and soon the power was OUT! The entire West End was pitch black. Not a light, not a heater, no internet to figure out what was going on, spotty cell service, wind screaming and the low tide slapping against the bulkhead. Great start to vacation! Luckily, the power came back on about an hour and a half later and I was thrilled to have heat again.

Sunday was just as windy and I shot a few photos of the "white caps" on Lake Como. The first thing that's odd about this photo is that the tide is really low. The beach like area is typically covered with several feet of water.

These are waves moving into the inlet between our set of townhouse buildings and the next section. The tide level usually covers the dark marks on the concrete bulkhead.

We woke up early - always do - and saw something we've never seen before. A lot of water had been blown out of the back bay! The new Pirates Cove beach ...

This is the estuary area - the inlet between the buildings.

Bulkhead leading to what's left of our boat dock.

This is the tidal flow/canal between the complex and the Country Club.

Beautiful sunrise!
